While traditional jewellery is a huge market worldwide, the industry is more circumspect when it comes to children and even more so when jewellery for boys is considered. Most industry players focus on girls’ jewellery with only a very few venturing into the market for boys. For example, Molly Brown’s Erica Illingworth says the company is unlikely to enter the market for boys for business reasons but also because of her own feelings on the issue; she is not in favour of boys wearing jewellery. Another company, Kit Heath Kids, has various pieces which could be deemed unisex and caters for boys in this way, but chief executive Jeff Lancaster says they have no plans to create a special line specifically aimed at boys. The investment required for boys’ jewellery may be what is putting off some companies. Not only the cost of production, which is considerable, but effectively creating a new market segment requires a marketing plan, brand appraisal and strategic planning. It’s likely some companies may not want to take the risk only to find the plan not working, or that others may piggy back on its success. One company, Hot Diamonds, used to sell a boys line of jewellery which included bracelets inscribed with boats, cars and airplanes. Adryan Cressell, commerce chief at Hot Diamonds reports the company is not producing any children’s jewellery preferring to focus on the women’s market although new marketing strategies, including niche markets may be addressed in 2013. Gecko Jewellery, on the other hand is definitely part of the boys’ jewellery market with its D for Diamond brand. Design head Vicky Leyshon says the boys market is a definite focus for the company, producing increased sales and is destined to be part of their marketing mix for some time to come.
A former Falmouth high school student has surprised those outside the fashion world by being awarded the coveted Children’s Wear Designer of the Year for 2012 from the New York Parson’s School of Design. Giuliana Raggiani was in shock when her designs were selected from a class of nearly 200 fellow students. Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan and Isaac Mizrahi are graduates of the school which opened its doors in 1906 and anyone graduating from Parsons and getting an award is going places in the fashion world. Its likely Raggiani will have the choice of fashion houses and many job offers are probably already on the way. The awards are iconic in the fashion world, and are highly regarded as pointers to new talent on the rise. It’s hard enough to get into the school, let alone win one of the prestigious awards, says Ashley Lauren Kerr, a highly regarded fashion designer from Maine and points to Raggiani as someone to watch in the years ahead. The awards are judged by a panel of fashion critics, talent scouts and respected fashion designers. The panel views the collections and then invites selected students to participate in the fashion show. Francesca Sammaritano worked with Raggiani in her final year and confirmed her talent and resourcefulness. Apparently she developed her own colors and prints and did the machine knits herself and was an inevitable winner of the award, according to Sammaritano. In other results, Christy Jeehyun was awarded the Designer of the Year for menswear while Jin Kay won the woman’s category. The actual prize is an overly large pair of scissors with appropriate engravings on the side for the winners. In an ironic twist, the scissors actually work, which came as a surprise to Raggiani.

Going shopping with kids in tow is not on the ‘my favourite things’ list for most parents or guardians.
